The United States Attorneys Office for the District ofSouth Carolina is seeking applications from attorneys who are willing to acceptan unpaid position as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the CriminalDivision in Greenville, SC.

Aboutthe District: The attorney selected for this position willjoin approximately 50 attorneys in representing the interests of the UnitedStates Attorneys Office for the District of South Carolina, located inColumbia, Greenville, Florence, or Charleston, South Carolina. Responsibilitiesand Opportunity Offered: The selected applicant will serve asan uncompensated Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) assigned tothe Criminal Division with responsibilities commensurate to the applicant’sexperience and abilities. These responsibilities may include assisting in theinvestigation and prosecution of federal crimes, and, as such, may involvepractice in the grand jury and before the United States District Court. Theincumbent in this position will assist in drafting responses to appellatebriefs and to federal habeas petitions brought pursuant to 28 U.S.C. section2255.  Additional duties may includeresearching legal issues, assisting experienced Assistant U.S. Attorneys withhearings and trials, and some administrative responsibilities.

TravelRequired: Occasional travel both within and outsidethe District may be required.

RequiredQualifications: Applicants must possess aJ.D. degree and be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorneyunder the laws of a State, territory, or District of Columbia. Applicants mustbe active members in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction).

Note:South Carolina Bar does not have formal reciprocity agreements with any states.The local rules of the United States District Court require S.C. Bar membershipfor admission to practice before the U.S. District Court. Attorneys who are notcurrent members of the S.C. Bar may be asked, if selected, to consider takingthe S.C. Bar at the earliest available timeframe.

Preferred Qualifications: The office seeksapplicants with excellent skills in the following areas:(1) sound judgment anda strong work ethic; (2) the ability to work independently and efficiently; (3)the ability to work collaboratively and professionally with other lawyers andsupport staff; (4) strong skills in legal analysis, research and writing; (5)the ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues; and (6) strongorganizational skills.

Applicants must meet all qualifications upon the closingdate of this announcement.

All academic degrees and course work must be completed ata college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditationstatus from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department ofEducation.  For a list of schools thatmeet this criteria, see www.ed.gov.

Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a background investigation, to include credit check and arrest record, adjudicated by the Department of Justice.

Following appointment, Special Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside within the district to which he or she is appointed.  See 28 U.S.C 545 for district-specific information.

Individuals selected will be prohibited from engaging in any outside practice of law while appointed.

It is the policy of the Department to achieve a drug-free workplace and persons selected for employment will be required to pass a drug test which screens for illegal drug use prior to final appointment.  Employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory adjudication of a background investigation.  Only U.S. citizens are eligible for employment with the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the United States Attorneys Offices.  Unless otherwise indicated in a particular job advertisement, non-U.S. citizens may apply for employment with other organizations, but should be advised that appointments of non-U.S. citizens are extremely rare; such appointments would be possible only if necessary to accomplish the Departments mission and would be subject to strict security requirements.  Applicants who hold dual citizenship in the U.S. and another country will be considered no a case-by-case basis.
