ZF Transmissions is looking for CNC Machinists and CNC Set-Up Techs/Programmers to work in our new transmissions facility in Laurens, SC.
CNC Machinists – Level 2
Position Summary: Primary responsibility is to operate all equipment in assigned work area safely and within specifications.
Role Expectations:
- Operate all equipment in accordance with standard work practices within assigned work area.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment within assigned work area.
- Meet or exceed quality, productivity and cost standards within assigned work area.
- Participate and contribute to the team within assigned area.
- Train Operator Level I Technicians according to certification process.
Essential Functions:
- Satisfactorily perform all essential functions for an Operator Level I.
- Conform to all safety rules based on Job Safety Analysis (JSA) studies within assigned work area.
- Assist in training Operator Level I associates in accordance with Quality Standards, SOPs, JSAs and ISO Work Instructions in assigned work area.
- Expand skill set knowledge on additional equipment and processes within assigned work area.
- Demonstrate full range of process knowledge in assigned area and the impact on other related work areas.
- Utilize process knowledge in assigned work area to assist as needed in the troubleshooting process.
- Actively participate and contribute to the team within assigned area.
- Perform all required duties and communicate information within shift overlap procedure.
- Perform all quality checks including measurements and document in SPC system (CMM Reporter or SPC Control Charts) in accordance to job specifications and standard work practices within assigned work area.
- Adhere to all housekeeping SOPs in and around work area including 5S standards.
- Understand and work in accordance to all TS-16949 and ISO 14001 standards within assigned work area.
- Perform other duties specific to this position.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED (General Education Diploma) equivalent.
- Meet all Essential Skills and Experience requirements for an Operator Level I or must have 1-2 years of CNC, testing, or assembly experience in a manufacturing work cell environment.
Preferred Skills and experience:
- Manufacturing Skills Standards Council program @ Piedmont Tech or similar manufacturing skills program.
- 2-3 years Metal Work Apprenticeship experience.
CNC Machinists – Level 3
Position Summary: Primary responsibility is to operate all equipment in assigned work area safely and within specifications.
Role Expectations:
- Operate all equipment in accordance with standard work practices within assigned work area.
- Maintain a safe work environment with assigned work area.
- Meet or exceed quality, productivity and cost standards within assigned work area.
- Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all equipment and processes in assigned work area.
- Trainer for assigned work area according to certification process.
Essential Functions:
- Satisfactorily perform all essential functions and if necessary fill in for an Operator Level I and II.
- Conform to all safety rules based on Job Safety Analysis (JSA) studies within assigned work area.
- Train Level I and II Operators in accordance with Quality Standards, SOPs, JSAs and ISO Work Instructions in assigned work area.
- Assist as needed in setting up equipment in accordance with equipment specifications, SOPs and JSAs in assigned work area.
- Assist as needed in troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing production equipment in assigned work area.
- Verify that all quality checks including measurements and document are being recorded in the SPC system (CMM Reporter or SPC Control Charts) in accordance to job specifications and standard work practices within assigned work area.
- Actively participate and contribute to the team within assigned area.
- Perform all required duties and communicate information within shift overlap procedure.
- Adhere to all housekeeping SOPs in and around work area including 5S standards.
- Understand and work in accordance to all TS-16949 and ISO 14001 standards within assigned work area.

Essential Skills and Experience:

- Strength in CNC machining functions, included but not limited, such as to grinding, drilling, milling, hard turning, honing, and deburring.
- Knowledge of gear manufacturing processes including hobbing, broaching and gear cutting techniques.
- Grasp of laser welding techniques.
- Understanding of metal hardening techniques including inductive hardening, and vacuum carbonating.
- Comprehension in CNC machine change over procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge in CNC machine set up procedures.
Preferred Skills and experience:
- Manufacturing experience in a Technician role.
- Demonstrated knowledge in Tool Setup Operations.
- Two (2) to three (3) years Metal Work Apprenticeship experience (CNC).
- Demonstrated knowledge of the metal hardening process (Inductive Hardening or Vacuum Carbonating).
CNC Set-Up Techs/Programmers
Position Summary: Set up and operation of metal-cutting machines.
Role Expectations:
- Set up conventional, CNC and robotic machines for Hobbing, Hard & Rotational Turning, Power Honing, Interior Honing, Lapping, & Laser Welding.
- Thorough knowledge of CNC programming G & M code programming.
- Maintain gage integrity and ensure proper function.
- Perform tool changes and changeovers.
- Provide materials and prepare tools.
- Adjust speeds, feeds and tools according to blueprints and setup sheets.
- Optimize machining sequences by changing tool order, program sequences, and fixtures.
- Ability to train future set up techs.
Essential Functions:
- Perform first piece inspections, gain approvals and adjust settings as necessary.
- Develop and modify programs.
- Insert, clamp and align work pieces.
- Perform tool trials and studies.
- Check parts for dimensional accuracy and consistency.
- Correct setting data, fixations, etc.
- Investigate errors, initiate corrective actions and track progress.
- Define the sequence of production orders in machine utilization to align with the scheduled production program (e.g. variants, testing).
- Process and present indicators of productivity and capacity.
- Ensure compliance with default values.
- Conduct testing as required.
- Resolve disturbances (e.g. change and adjust equipment).
- Communicate descriptions of disturbances to the maintenance leadership.
- Initiate activities of process optimization.
- Maintain coolant systems integrity per specification.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED (General Education Diploma) equivalent and Associates Degree in a technical field or five (5) years experience in a related technical area with technical certifications.
- Demonstrate understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.
- Demonstrate understanding of PLC Program Logic.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize Microsoft Office software: Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Preferred Skills and experience:
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot automated equipment using Siemens (Step 7) software ladder logic.
- Demonstrated ability to write CNC programs (SINUMERIC 840D).
- Demonstrated experience in Motor / Motor Drive Troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated experience in Hydraulic Component Troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated experience in Pneumatic Component Troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated basic understanding of robotics.
